Dust jacket is unclipped, protected in removable mylar, with 1" closed tear at head of sunned spine, price-sticker glue residue on rear panel and front inner flap. First serialized in a magazine in 1882, with a second edition was released in book form. Chapters on the ancestry of the instrument and biographies of early makers are followed by a very technical study of the bow, wood, exterior and interior, varnishes, strings, and appliances. Chapters 8-23 explore the specifics of making and repairs. 366 pages includes index, appendices, B&W illustrations and diagrams.
