ISBN10: 1889758868, ISBN13: 9781889758862, [publisher: EVOLUTION PUB & MANUFACTURING. 15.07.2006.] Softcover XXII, 169 Seiten / p. sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - The Liber Pontificalis is an invaluable work, cataloging the names and dates of the Pontiffs of Rome back to St. Peter himself. Compiled haphazardly through the 15th century, the earliest portion was probably first set down in the mid-6th century. This English translation covers up through Pelagius II whose reign ended in ad 590, and includes biographies of noteworthy Popes such as Clement I, Sylvester, Leo the Great, John I, and Silverius. Though many of the earliest entries are brief, devoid of detail, and littered with errors, the fuller and more accurate biographies of the 4th, 5th and 6th centuries are of greater scholarly value as they are often the only source for certain important episodes and events. -- This reprint of the 1916 edition is heavily footnoted. The translator, Louise Ropes Loomis, was laudably scrupulous in pointing out where the text is at odds with other reliable data, drawing especially on the authoritative 19th century commentaries of Mommsen and Duchesne. ISBN 9781889758862 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 45 12,7 x 1,2 x 20,3 cm, Broschiert / Paperback. [Berlin, Germany] [Publication Year: ...
