Wishing to do the same, he rubs himself with the magic ointment, but to his horror he is transformed into an ass and stolen by thieves before he can get hold of the antidote, a rose. In his ass-form he has a long series of adventures, comical, satirical, dangerous, amorous, and always entertaining. He is often beaten and ill treated and is several times in danger of being killed. To his embarrassment a wealthy lady falls in love with him and proves to have greater appetites even than an ass. Finally, with the aid of the goddess Venus, or Isis, he succeeds in eating a wreath of roses and becomes a human being again. -- The pace of this entertaining book is fast, and the story and characters are vivid. Jack Lindsays translation brings out the rich, sensuous tone of the original and the frank and realistic imagery of Apuleius style.
