Laid in is a printed page “The Group of Seven (1920 – 1931)” that was prepared in conjunction with an exhibition of paintings at Park Lane, Halifax, from the Sobey Art Foundation representing the landscape art of the Group. This book contains a great number of black and white and colour reproductions of the artists’ work, many full page. The chapters of the book are “Precedents for the Group of Seven – Montreal”; “Early Years in Toronto and the Cult of the North”; “The War Years and Algoma”; “The Group of Seven Exhibitions and Nationalism”; “Art Takes to the Road”; and “The Later Years”. The book also contains a Chronology of events for the artists. Peter Mellen at the time he wrote this book was a professor of Fine Arts at the University of Toronto. This large format book, 231 pages measuring 315mm X 260mm, is in fine condition. The slipcase and the dust jacket are in near fine condition, and the later is now enclosed in a protective mylar wrap. A magnificent production by McClelland and Stewart and a cornerstone work on the Group of Seven. This large book will require additional postage.
