However, in order to avoid confusion with Southeast Asia, the geographically vague but popular term of "Near East" has been used in the title. The time dimension begins with 570 A.D. and ends with June 1, 1974. As there is no single accepted transliteration system from the Arabic script to the Latin alphabet, the first chapter identifies some of the common Latin variations for particular Arabic script letters and vowel sounds, as well as the transliteration system used by the Middle East Studies Association. Sixty-nine abbreviations of major periodicals and reference works are listed in Chapter II, while the following chapter identifies the abbreviation for sixty-five Twentieth Century political, economic and social groups.
