New York: Alfred A. Knopf, Date: 1993. First American Edition [stated]. Presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Good. 25 cm. xvi, 432 pages. Illustrations. Maps. References. Bibliography. Sir John Desmond Patrick Keegan OBE FRSL (15 May 1934 - 2 August 2012) was an English military historian, lecturer, writer and journalist. Leaving the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1986, Keegan joined the Daily Telegraph as a defence correspondent and stayed as defence editor until his death. Derived from a Kirkus review: With his usual fluent mastery, Keegan offers provocative perspectives on armed conflict through the ages. Taking immediate aim at Clausewitzian theory, the author argues that culture has frequently proved as powerful as politics in decisions to wage war. Ranging backward and forward in time, he divides his canvass into categories that allow him to focus on broad as well as narrow aspects of mortal combat. Keegan ...

Book Condition: Fine. DJ: Fine; NOT Priced. Mauve paper over boards with black cloth overlay on the spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine. 432 pp 8vo. This book offers a sweeping view of the place of warfare in human culture and a brilliant exposition of the human impulse toward violence. The author probes the meanings, motivations, and methods underlying war in different societies over the course of more than two thousand years, from ritualistic combat of Stone Age people to the warfare of mass destruction in the present age. He shows why honor has always been accorded to the soldierly virtues and how war has maintained its singular hold on the imagination, reaching into "the most secret places of the human heart, places where self dissolves rational purpose, where pride reigns, where emotion is paramount, where instinct is king." Keegan focuses his analysis on the great changes in military technology: the discoveries of bronze and iron, the taming of the horse for chariot and riding, the introduction of gunpowder and the mobilization of science and industry to create the atom bomb." "Keegan discusses early warfare, the proliferation of Bronze Age warfare and then Iron Age warfare (Greek hoplites and phalanxes, Roman legions and maniples). He also talks about the conquests of the "horse peoples", first under the Assyrians, then the Achaemenids, Parthians and Sassanids; then in the 7th century the Arabs conquer a lot of territory, followed by the Mongols under Genghis Khan and finally the last of the horse peoples under a Mongol named Tamerlane, who unleashes massive carnage and destruction.
