Original spine laid over the top of the new spine shows some loss to head and tail. Restored to an attractive, robust condition. An English translation of the French traveller's 'L'Inde des Rajas' (1875), being an account of his time in India between 1864 and 1868, filled with engravings based on hundreds of his own photographs. First published in English by Chapman and Hall in 1876.

[publisher: Scribner Armstrong New York] Hardcover First Edition Large thick 4to hardcover volume in green gold embossed pictorial binding. Sadly spine and front board have separated. This seems to be the first American edition put out the same year as the first English one. We could find no other copies. This has the best cover illustrations of any versions. Front and back are the same. Back seems to have gotten wet at the bottom at some point causing some cloth to loosen at bottom. Last 100 pages have a little water stain at bottom of spine side. 579 pages. Should be rebound a very scarce title.

Contents fair, some foxing on many pages, only noticed a couple of minor pencil underlines, with correct spelling in pencil to edge, no other inscriptions. Marbled end pages & marbling to edges. Gilt embossed to front cover is ‘A.D. 1576 my trust is in god alone’,& the coat-of-arms of Sutton Valence school.
