[publisher: Scribner Armstrong New York] Hardcover First Edition Large thick 4to hardcover volume in green gold embossed pictorial binding. Sadly spine and front board have separated. This seems to be the first American edition put out the same year as the first English one. We could find no other copies. This has the best cover illustrations of any versions. Front and back are the same. Back seems to have gotten wet at the bottom at some point causing some cloth to loosen at bottom. Last 100 pages have a little water stain at bottom of spine side. 579 pages. Should be rebound a very scarce title.

Contains 317 illustrations and 6 maps. Noticeable cracking to front hinge, however binding throughout remains firm with all pages and front board attached. Pages are clean overall, with mild tanning and some foxing throughout. More pronounced towards the start and end of the book. Deckled text block edges with small tears and creases. Larger tear to page 117, text remains legible. Occasional thumb-marking. Illustrations and maps are bright and clear with mild tanning to edges. Boards have heavy edge wear with corner bumping. Noticeable splits to joints & corners with small areas of loss. Cloth is frayed with extensive chipping. Visible tanning to spine. Faint black marks overall. Book has a slight forward lean. 1876.
